Monument Sign Project
|
The Whittier Historic Neighborhood Association's vision of historic neighborhood monument signs became a reality in August of 2004 when the first 6,000-pound cement and river rock monument was placed on the Hadley Street median island between Friends and Washington Avenues. A second identical monument sign, built to replace an earlier wood sign destroyed by a motorist, was placed on the median island at the corner of Painter Avenue and Hadley Street. The signs were paid for by funds raised by WHNA's Annual Neighborhood Home Tour and built and installed by Whittier Public Works Department workers. The long-awaited signs accomplished WHNA's goals of informing people passing through the neighborhood that they are in a historic district, establish a much-desired neighborhood identity and greatly improved aesthetics along both Hadley Street and Painter Avenue. In time, as funds become available, WHNA envisions placing identical monument signs at other prominent locations around the neighborhood.
